SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol that is used to connect to a web server and conduct different tasks using a command line. The protocol is preferred by many expert users, for the reason that the data transmitted over it is encrypted, so it can't be intercepted on the way by a third party. SSH access can be employed for a number of things depending on the type of hosting account. With a shared hosting account, for example, SSH is one of the ways to import/export a database or to upload a file in case the hosting server allows it. If you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH may be used for just about anything - you could install software or restart certain services such as the web server or the database server that run on the machine. SSH is employed primarily with UNIX-like Systems, but there are clients that permit you to use the protocol if your computer is using a different Operating System as well. The connection is made on TCP port 22 by default and the remote hosting server always listens for incoming connections on that port although a number of providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Website Hosting

SSH access can be permitted with a click from the Hepsia Control Panel if the Linux website hosting that you've selected includes this feature as standard. If not, you may add it via the Add Services/Upgrades section of your Control Panel and enable it instantly. You'll find all the info you need in the SSH section of the CP - the host, the port number and the username that you must use, alongside detailed Help articles where we have listed each of the commands that you can use inside the account and examples of the syntax which you have use. The SSH password may be modified from the very same section anytime with a couple of mouse clicks. Assuming that SSH access is enabled, you shall also be able to connect safely and securely using an FTP client too. With an SFTP connection, all of the files you upload shall go through an encrypted connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is included as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server packages, while with others you will be able to include it from the hosting CP if needed - even just for the current month. In either case, you'll be able to activate and de-activate the function with only one click from the SSH section of the CP. In the same place, you'll find the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You shall also find a box in which you can easily enter the password which you want to use, since it does not have to be the same as the one you use to log into the CP. For better protection, you could also change it as often as you require. A full list of the commands which can be performed inside a semi-dedicated account is available in our Knowledge Base, alongside the syntax and a couple of examples. An extra function after SSH access is enabled will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP using any FTP client that supports this type of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Web Hosting

You'll be able to use SSH to manage your content regardless of which Linux VPS web hosting packages you pick when you sign up, as all our plans offer this function as standard. You will not need to add or activate anything manually - immediately after your web server is prepared and you get the Welcome email with the login information, you can connect and begin working on your sites or any software you want to install and run on the web server. You will have root-level access to the VPS and since the account will be isolated from the other accounts inside the physical server, you shall be able to do anything you'd like with no restrictions. You'll be able to set up any application that you need and which shall run on a Linux-based web server, restart any software server (web, database, game, media, etc.) and work with your files and databases efficiently.
